NSSR Lab Overview

The Neuromotor Speech and Swallowing Restoration (NSSR) laboratory was founded by Dr. Emily Plowman in 2011 at the University of South Florida.  The NSSR lab utilizes a synergistic and translational approach to studying the underlying neural sensorimotor control of speech, respiration and swallowing as well as factors mediating recovery or preseveration of function in individuals with neurologic disease (human clinical lab) and in translational animal models of oral motor dysfunction (basic science lab).

NSSR Mission

The mission of NSSR is to improve and maintain upper aerodigestive tract function in individuals with neurologic disease and the associated processes of speech, breathing and swallowing. Dr. Plowman and her team aim to accomplish this goal through the provision of expert clinical care, patient education and innovative evidence-based research in both translational animal models and human clinical trials.

NSSR Research Techniques

NSSR laboratories are equipped with state of the art equipment and technology to study neural mechanisms controlling speech, respiration and swallowing and factors mediating recovery or preservation of these processes in diseased neurologic systems. Techniques utilized for assessing neural control and function in health, disease and recovery in NSSR labs include:
Basic Science Lab
  • Videofluoroscopic evaluation of swallowing function (small animal models)
  • Evaluation of lingual strength (small animal models)
  • Acoustic analysis of chewing and biting patterns
  • Limb motor testing (cylinder, vermicelli handling and skilled pellet reaching behavioral testing)
  • Progressive limb motor and lingual resistance exercise training
  • Intracortical Microstimulation (ICMS)
  • High Protein Liquid Chromography (HPLC)
  • Near Infrared Densitometry and Cell count analysis
