NSSR Speaks at the NEMO Center

Milan, Italy Dr. Emily Plowman and Research Therapist Michelle Rosado visited the Neuromuscular Omnicomprehensive Center (NEMO) in Milan, Italy on May 19th where Dr. Plowman was invited to speak about her research in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). Plowman Appointed Medical Advisor to A Life Story Foundation

The mission of this foundation is to raise awareness and create action to discover effective treatments, and ultimately a cure for ALS. A Life Story Foundation was founded by Kevin Swan, a patient of Dr. Plowmans, who was diagnosed with ALS at age 30 and who has dedicated his life to increasing awareness of this devastating disorder. Gaziano receives The 2014 American Board of Swallowing & Swallowing Disorders Award

Joy Gaziano was presented with the 2014 American Board of Swallowing and Swallowing Disorders Award for her research investigating factors affecting return to oral intake in head and neck cancer patients post-endoscopic lumen restoration. Joy was presented with this award at the national Dysphagia Research Society meeting in Nashville, Tennessee. This marks consecutive back-to-back years that someone from NSSR has been the recipient of this prestigious national award. Way to go Joy!

NSSR Presents at Dysphagia Research Society Meeting

A total of six presentations were given from the NSSR Lab at the recent Dysphagia Research Society (DRS) meeting in Nashville Tennessee. Scientific Research presentations were given by lab members Lauren Tabor, Joy Gaziano, Stephanie Randall Watts, Amanda Domer and Dr. Plowman. Dr. Plowman was also an invited panelist on the Neurodegenerative Panel for treatment of Swallowing Disorders where she provided updates in treatments for individuals with ALS. Plowman Presents at the Turkish Dysphagia Research Society Congress Meeting

Ankara, Turkey Plowman gave three presentations on: Applying principles of plasticity to treatment of swallowing disorders Expiratory Muscle Strength Training and Treatment Strategies for individuals with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. Other speakers included in Dr's Pere Clave (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona), Catriona Steele (University of Toronto), Ianessa Humbert (Hopkins University), and Reza Shaker (Medical College of Wisconsin).

NSSR presents at Cutting Edge Laryngology Conference

Royal College of Surgeons, London, UK Two research presentations from the NSSR Lab were given at the Cutting edge Laryngology conference held at the Royal College of Surgeons in London. Doctoral student Amanda Domer won best platform scientific presentation for her research on the effects of aspirated thickened water in a lung injury model. Doctoral Student Amanda Domer being presented with the David Howard Prize for the Best Oral Presentation by Dr’s Guri Sandhu and Martin Birchall.

Stephanie Watts Wins Statewide Graduate Research Award

NSSR doctoral Students Amanda Domer and Stephanie Watts were selected to present their research at the Statewide Graduate Research Day in Tampa, Florida. This event featured subject division winners from each university in the state of Florida, therefore showcased the top graduate students in Florida. At this event, Stephanie Watts was awarded Second Place for her research investigating cough and airway protection in individuals with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Awesome job Steph!
